At a roundtable discussion on the state of privacy in South Africa, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy Joseph Cannataci said the country is “about 30 years behind” in implementing privacy laws, Mail & Guardian reports. While the country's Protection of Personal Information Act was signed in 2013, it goes into effect April 2020. Cannataci said South Africa should better staff the office of the information regulator to ensure privacy and data protection.
