The Register reports TalkTalk will have to pay the 1,000 GBP fine handed down by the Information Commissioner’s Office after the company lost its appeal. The ICO handed down the penalty after TalkTalk failed to notify the office of a personal data breach within 24 hours of its discovery. The ICO deemed the circumstances were feasible for TalkTalk to report the breach. TalkTalk appealed the fine on the grounds it only became “sufficiently aware” of the breach after it finished its own investigation into the concerns raised by the customer. The issue stemmed from one of the company’s mechanisms for keeping customer data secure, specifically the password system customers use to access their accounts online.
