A study conducted by researchers at Stanford University found speech-recognition systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, IBM and Microsoft misidentified 35% of words from black users, The New York Times reports. For white users, systems misidentified words approximately 19% of the time. The study indicated data used to train the systems may not be diverse enough. “The assumption is that all ethnic groups are well represented by these companies. But they are not,” Stanford Researcher John Rickford said.
