MediaPost reports a class-action complaint has been filed in a U.S. District Court in California alleging that Google violated state laws regarding consent and voice recordings. The plaintiffs argue that Google's smart software, including Google Assistant and Google Home, recorded conversations "on multiple occasions, including when they failed to utter a hot word." The plaintiffs' lawyers wrote in their complaint that "California’s privacy laws recognize the unique privacy interest implicated by the recording of someone’s voice. That privacy interest has been heightened by companies exploiting consumers’ private data."
