Reuters reports the Senate has confirmed Kirstjen Nielsen, 62-37, to lead the Department of Homeland Security, a vacancy created when John Kelly left to join U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Nielsen was John Kelly’s chief of staff while he led DHS and also served in the administration of George W. Bush. In a statement, House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte said she would bring, “the expertise and leadership needed to successfully run the Department.” As Homeland Security secretary, Nielsen will oversee “more than 240,000 employees responsible for immigration enforcement, U.S. border and airport security, disaster response, and protecting U.S. infrastructure from cyber attacks.”
