Victims of the March 2016 phishing scam that left an estimated 10,000 Seagate current and former employees and their beneficiaries’ data exposed have filed a class-action suit, ZDNet reports. Unknown thieves used the phishing scam to steal W-2 forms that they then used to complete fraudulent tax returns, the report states. Complainants have requested both a trial by jury and that Seagate extend their compensation for the attack beyond credit monitoring to damages and “out-of-pocket expenses” to all those victimized. Seagate has called for a formal dismissal of the case, maintaining that victims “cannot hold Seagate responsible for the damage caused by the scammers” and that they “must actually allege facts that show they are entitled to relief” from the company, the report adds.
