Santa Clara County, Calif., has named Mike Shapiro, CIPP/G, CIPP/US, its first chief privacy officer, San Jose Inside reports. Shapiro is a U.S. Army veteran, and has experience training government agencies and corporations on data breaches and program development. The hiring comes as the county sought to create the first Privacy Center of Excellence in the nation. Shapiro has filed a report to the county’s Finance and Open Government Committee, where he detailed efforts to focus on the privacy aspects of surveillance policies and data sharing, while also voicing his intent to build a strong privacy program to potentially be used as a benchmark for other local governments.
