The European Commission (EC) has published a statement on national data retention laws amidst press reports claiming the EC might take Germany to court for its drafted national data retention law. The EC wrote that it has “repeatedly said” the decision to introduce national laws on the matter is “a national decision” and it has “no intention to go back on this statement.” The Register reports the reason Germany’s data retention law may not pass is “far more convoluted” than originally reported and actually has to do with trade rules; specifically, the European Technical Standards Directive.
