Ransomware payments in extortion schemes have increased significantly since last year, TechTarget reports, citing research from cryptocurrency analytics firm Chainalysis. Chainalysis found ransomware gangs extorted more than USD449.1 million in the first half of 2023, which is approximately USD175 million more than the amount extorted by victims of ransomware attacks during the same timeframe last year. In 2021, Chainalysis observed ransomware payments amounted to USD766 million, which fell to USD457 million in 2022.
