University of Calgary assistant professor Gideon Christian received a CAD50,000 contributions grant from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to research race, gender and privacy implications of artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition technology. The study will work to "identify the complex issues surrounding private-sector development and deployment" of facial recognition, including unintentional and trained bias.
