University of California, Berkeley Computer Science Professor Dawn Song is working to build a platform that gives individuals control over their personal data and compensation for its use by corporations, The New York Times reports. Song, who recently started Oasis Labs, says it’s important to “develop technologies that can utilize data in a privacy-preserving way.” She added, “Today, companies are taking users’ data and essentially using it as a product; they monetize it. The world can be very different if this is turned around and users maintain control of the data and get revenue from it.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
