Ars Technica reports the Article 31 Committee — a group of national representatives in the EU — will approve the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield on Friday, paving the way for approval from the European Commission next Monday. EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourová and U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker are then expected to officially sign the agreement Tuesday. Bruno Gencarelli, who heads up the commission’s data protection group, said there have been “substantial improvements” from the original text presented earlier this year, including an ombudsman “fully independent from intelligence agencies,” the report states. Meanwhile, in an op-ed on Privacy Shield for EurActiv, former Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Julie Brill writes, “a solution is at hand that will enhance real, enforceable privacy protections on both sides of the Atlantic.”
