The Markup reports its Blacklight tool scanned more than 23,000 websites of nonprofit organizations working in sensitive areas, like mental health, finding many are gathering and sharing visitors’ data. Eighty-six percent of websites were found to have third-party cookies or tracking network requests, 439 websites loaded scripts to monitor visitors’ clicks and keystrokes, and some had embedded trackers. Privacy researcher Gunes Acar said website users “probably don’t assume” how their information is used, adding, “The more sensitive the website is, the more worried I am.”
