Now that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has invalidated Safe Harbor, the Article 29 Working Party (WP29) is set to convene Thursday to coordinate its response, EurActiv reports. Data protection authorities will now likely face an onslaught of privacy complaints from citizens concerned about companies’ transfer of their data to the U.S., and the WP29 has also set an “extraordinary plenary session to hammer out its approach to privacy complaints and data transfers.” Meanwhile, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council said the ECJ decision “reinforces the need for rapid adoption of EU data protection reform.” U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said the decision “necessitates release of the updated Safe Harbor framework as soon as possible,” and a column for The Irish Times reports that the ruling “creates a big headache for Ireland.”
