Social media platforms have asked the Indian government to hold a consultation process with stakeholders before finalizing amendments to the information technology rules for social media, BloombergQuint reports. Twitter Global Vice President of Public Policy Colin Crowell called for a “carefully crafted balance” between security and free expression and added that the process “should not be solely with the largest companies in the space but with a variety of stakeholders — both in industry and civil society.” Draft amendments would require social media platforms to identify and curb unlawful content, as well as for “intermediaries” to track originators of information upon government request.
