In an op-ed for the Harvard Business Review, Samir Jain and Lisa Ropple write that less burden should be placed on individual companies and more attention should be paid toward finding a systemic way to address cyber threats. To reorient the U.S.'s approach to companies in the wake of a data breach, they add that the government should take a more active role in fostering a cyber defense. The authors write companies that experience a cyberattack should be treated as victims and that the current perspective “is not only unfair, but counterproductive.”
