In an op-ed for Re/code, the Future of Privacy Forum’s Stacey Gray, CIPP/US, discusses the findings of the organization’s new study, Always On: Privacy Implications of Microphone-Enabled Devices, arguing that while voice-activated devices are a boon for convenience-hounds, they still pose a privacy threat that developers need to be sensitive to. There’s also the increase of IoT and biometric laws worth keeping track of, like Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act and the increasingly popular “two-party consent statues,” Gray argues. “Without doubt, the landscape of privacy norms around voice data is shifting,” she said. “As voice and speech become key interfaces with the smart home and the Internet of Things, privacy-savvy companies will be smart to roll out new devices with an ear tuned to consumers’ expectations.”
