In an op-ed for The Hill, U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board member Travis LeBlanc argues federal chief privacy officers are needed to oversee an agency’s privacy policies and practices, as well as investigate and enforce compliance. Oversight is impeded by inefficient staffing and resources at some agencies, which inconsistently structure privacy roles. Federal CPOs are the “first steps towards a whole of government approach for ensuring that privacy gets the attention it rightly deserves,” he writes.
