U.S. Congress must not wait for federal privacy legislation to pass two bills tackling data brokerage harms, Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy Senior Fellow Justin Sherman writes in an op-ed for Tech Policy Press. The proposed Health and Location Data Protection Act and The Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Surveillance Act “take aim at the sprawling data brokerage ecosystem,” which Sherman said, “poses risks to individuals and to society as a whole across civil rights, consumer privacy, physical safety, and national security."
