The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights announced it will investigate Google and Ascension’s “Project Nightingale,” The Wall Street Journal reports. OCR Director Roger Severino said the agency “will seek to learn more information about this mass collection of individuals’ medical records to ensure that [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act] protections were fully implemented.” A Google spokeswoman said in a statement the tech company will be “happy to cooperate with any questions about the project.” Politico reports on how “Project Nightingale” may impact Google’s acquisition of Fitbit, while several lawmakers have raised privacy concerns about the data collection initiative.
