A Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee hearing highlighted a continued concern lawmakers have had with tech companies, the Calgary Herald reports. Members of Parliament criticized Google for its decision not to run policy ads for the upcoming federal election. Representatives from the tech company said it could not comply with a new law that required any promotion to be held on an online ad registry. Toronto Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith said Google’s size allows it to ignore laws within the country, an allegation Google Canada Representative Colin McKay sought to contest. The same committee voted to subpoena Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
