So-called mobile application “privacy nutrition labels,” created by Apple and Google, “too often seemed inconsistent with information in the apps' privacy policy,” Carnegie Mellon University Bosch Distinguished Professor in Security and Privacy Technologies Lorrie Cranor, CIPT, writes for Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery. She said the nutrition labels introduced on iOS in late 2020 and on Android in 2022 also “were not prominently placed (and) used confusing terminology.” She recommended Apple and Google improve label accuracy by having developers compile specific lists of data collected, make labels more comprehensible and easier to find.
