In an op-ed column for The New York Times in reaction to the death of Roger Ailes, Monica Lewinsky describes how the then-newly formed Fox News network took the story of her affair with President Bill Clinton "and made certain [Ailes'] anchors hammered it ceaselessly, 24 hours a day." The story put Fox News on the map, but, she notes, "Their dream was my nightmare. My character, my looks and my life were picked apart mercilessly." She points out that it was a turning point in our culture. "Just as television news was devolving into a modern coliseum, the internet came along and compounded this culture of shame and vitriol," she writes, adding, "Our world — of cyberbullying and chyrons, trolls and tweets — was forged in 1998."
