Attorneys for Upturn, Inc., have filed a lawsuit against the New York City Police Department in New York State Supreme Court arguing that New Yorkers "have a right to know how police are searching their cell phones," Public News Service reports. The suit comes almost one year after the Supreme Court ordered the NYPD to divulge its search tactics following a previous freedom of information request. "That's an incredibly invasive window into the most private areas of our lives," Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn said of the available search tools. "And that sort of data collection requires powerful safeguards to make sure it's only being used in cases where it's actually necessary."
