Parliamentarian and member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee reviewing provisions of India’s draft Personal Data Protection Bill Amar Patnaik said state-level data protection authorities and a national watchdog are needed to ensure a robust law, the Hindustan Times reports. One data protection authority for all of India, as Patnaik said is proposed under the current draft, would “be overwhelming,” while state-level DPAs would allow for a more “robust and implementable” data protection regime. Patnaik said he is optimistic the committee’s report will be adopted in the winter session.
