In an effort to fall in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation, The Irish Times reports that the Cabinet has announced the “digital age of consent,” or the age at which a data controller can hold information gathered on an individual, should be set at 13. Parental consent will be required for children under the age of 13. A government spokesman pointed out that member states can set their own consent age within a window of 13 to 16 years of age, adding, “and we've gone for the lower end.”
