In its report on advertising technology and real-time bidding, the U.K. Information Commissioner's Office states the entire adtech industry has been operating illegally, the Financial Times reports. ICO Executive Director for Technology and Innovation Simon McDougall said companies have not properly gathered consent to use personal data to serve ads. The ICO cited a lack of transparency in how data is processed and sold in RTB scenarios. Rather than single out companies, the ICO has given the adtech industry a six-month grace period to shore up its practices. “If you operate in the adtech space, it’s time to look at what you’re doing now, and to assess how you use personal data,” McDougall said. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
