The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony today on reform of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), The Hill reports. Originally proposed nearly two-and-a-half years ago, the Email Privacy Act has a supermajority of 300 cosponsors, but supporters, according to the report, have decided to not force a vote through a discharge petition. A recent poll conducted by Digital 4th Coalition reveals that 86 percent of the Americans surveyed support updating ECPA. "It is clear from our results that Americans want online privacy rules to be updated and respond to the message that these laws were written before most people had emails and access to reliable Internet,” Digital 4th Coalition has stated.
