GovInfoSecurity reports 4.25 million individuals have been affected by 142 major data breaches according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ HIPAA Breach Reporting Tool. Nearly 90% of the individuals impacted by the breaches had their information compromised in hacking incidents. The University of Washington School of Medicine had the largest amount of victims for a single breach with 973,000. Meanwhile, billing vendor OS has started to notify patients of various health care providers their data was exposed after an employee email account was hacked late last year.
