“Europeans should defend their online privacy themselves,” The Irish Times reports, quoting comments by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald that major online companies “have become so incredibly powerful … that we have a situation where even elected governments are almost no match and that poses a very serious problem.” He continued, “It is inconceivable to think of the Irish Government, the EU or U.S. government imposing meaningful constraints on companies like Facebook and Google,” and he urged users to be cautious when it comes to using services known to supply information to the U.S. and to “build bricks” around online activity through encryption.
