Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, prohibited the general use of facial recognition systems utilizing biometric data until a new law is passed or the end of 2023, Reuters reports. The decision came after two cities planned to implement different facial recognition technologies. The agency will allow use under municipal "urban security pacts," and carved out an exception for “when such technologies play a role in judicial investigations or the fight against crime.”
