Facial recognition technology is being used in 100 venues around New South Wales and will be added to more pubs and clubs next year to help identify gamblers registered with the state’s self-exclusion program, Vice reports. The technology will cross reference collected images of a venue’s customers with a database of registered gamblers. Digital Rights Watch Australia Program Lead Samantha Floreani called the technology “invasive” and “dangerous,” and said “there is a swathe of other measures that could be taken that don’t rely on facial surveillance.”
