The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Monday released a set of recommendations for the recreational use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), The New York Times reports. Under the proposal, owners must register their devices—ones that weigh 55 pounds or less—with the federal government. The registration data would be placed in a national database, which would include their name and address with email address and phone number as optional. According to the report, the FAA is expected to approve the majority of the recommendations. Drone use is growing in popularity and expected to increase rapidly during the holiday season. The Electronic Privacy Information Center has pushed the FAA to require that UAVs broadcast registration data and that authorities be notified if a drone carries surveillance capabilities, but the FAA task force did not say whether it would create such requirements.
