Ambassadors from the European Union endorsed an agreement that would prevent the misuse of personal data in European Parliament elections. The agreement, originally reached between the European Council presidency and the European Parliament, will open European political parties to a financial penalty of up to 5 percent of their annual budget for taking advantage of information involved in data breaches in a way that could influence the outcome of an election. The agreement requires formal Parliament approval and adoption by the council before taking force.
