The Senate Judiciary Committee heldover a markup of legislation Thursday that would reform the 30-year-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act after some senators offered new last-minute amendments, Reuters reports. Privacy advocates are concerned the new provisions would effectively kill the reform. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, introduced an amendment that would increase the FBI’s authority to use National Security Letters to acquire metadata from email providers. Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Mike Lee, R- Utah, agreed to postpone the legislation to review the proposed amendments.
