Ireland’s first “right-to-be-forgotten” case is currently sitting with a Civil Circuit Court judge, as Dublin politician Mark Savage seeks to have Google de-list a Reddit post from which he claims labels him homophobic, Ars Technica reports. Savage has taken the case to Civil Circuit Court Judge Elma Sheahan after Google initially refused to take the link down and a failed appeal attempt with Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon. The Reddit thread discussed Savage’s literature from the 2014 election containing a reference to “disgusting gay perverts.” Dixon agreed with Google’s decision to keep the links, given the context of the situation. Savage is unlikely to prevail in court, the report states. “If anything, this appears to be a complaint of defamation dressed up as a data protection matter,” said TJ McIntyre, chairman of Digital Rights Ireland.
