Maker of drone and aerial imaging systems DJI announced it is implementing a new privacy feature, called Local Data Mode, available for its DJI Pilot app, The Verge reports. The feature is designed to stop internet traffic to and from the app when in flight. While the update will only be available for drones used in a professional context at first, DJI told The Verge that it "will wait and see how the mode is received" before expanding the update across other platforms. Brendan Schulman, the vice president of policy and legal affairs at DJI, said in a statement for the company, "We are creating Local Data Mode to address the needs of our enterprise customers, including public and private organizations that are using DJI technology to perform sensitive operations around the world." The update followed concerns of cyber vulnerabilities that left DJI drones banned from use by the U.S. Army.
