A report from the Security Intelligence Review Committee revealed the Canadian Security Intelligence Service gathered information on anti-petroleum groups, The Canadian Press reports. The study stemmed from a complaint made by the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, which also accused CSIS of sharing the information with the National Energy Board. The review committee determined the data collection performed by CSIS fell within its mandate and any information obtained was done “in an ancillary manner, in the context of other lawful investigations.” British Columbia Civil Liberties Association Lawyer Paul Champ said his group still believes it is unlawful for CSIS to continue to hold onto the data it has on the groups.
