British Columbia’s college of registered nurses, known as the CRNBC, handed out a 30-day suspension to a nurse who, in 2013 and 2014, accessed the medical records for 74 patients at the Vancouver Island Health Authority without permission, CBC reports. In a statement, the college said that the nurse had “no legitimate care relationship” with those involved in the data breach. The health authority terminated the nurse upon discovery of the breach and stated it received her full cooperation during the investigation. The health authority said in a release, "When a privacy breach occurs, we conduct a thorough investigation, which includes taking steps to remediate risk and prevent the situation from reoccurring, up to and including termination of an employee."
