In a news release, the Council of the European Union announced it has concluded that the Working Party on Information Exchange and Data Protection can continue its data retention for the purpose of fighting crime. The council added in its conclusions that the European Commission will have the right to continue exploring the retention practices and make recommendations on its effectiveness. "The Council noted that data retention is an essential tool for investigating serious crime efficiently, but one whose use should be guided by the need to protect fundamental rights and freedoms," the council said in its release.
