Following reports that the U.S. National Security Agency shut down a system designed to analyze logs of U.S. citizens’ calls and texts, The Hill reports that privacy groups and lawmakers feel emboldened as they make the case that elements of the USA Freedom Act should not be reauthorized. A group of more than 30 advocacy groups wrote an open letter requesting that Congress refuse to reauthorize three provisions that are scheduled to sunset. “[Privacy activists] always have thought that the program should end, that there was no basis for it, but it’s even easier to make that decision because it’s been defunct for the past six months,” Demand Progress Policy Director Daniel Schuman said.
