ABC News Australia reports charitable fundraising efforts are using increasingly intrusive mechanisms, often requiring personal data before accepting a donation. The practice, however, is not violating current privacy law. Amnesty International Australia Fundraising Manager Rachel Walker stated that data is collected and stored in accordance with the law and that donors can opt out at any point. Australian Privacy Foundation Chairman David Vaile explains that some charitable organizations have exemptions from privacy laws on the basis that "they're doing good work" and added, "over time, you wonder if they any longer justify those exemptions, which would otherwise prevent them, for instance, sending [your information] on to other entities."
