A ballot initiative seeking to establish new consumer privacy rights and expand liability for consumer data breaches will be voted on in California’s November 2018 election, MediaPost reports. The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 aims to give consumers more control over how their data is used and would apply to every company that uses data from Californian residents. As stated in the proposed ballot, "The measure would also allow consumers to sue businesses for security breaches of consumers’ personal information or for other violations of the initiative’s provisions." Major corporations, including AT&T, Comcast, Google, Facebook and Verizon, are listed in opposition to the initiative.
