State Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Calif., has introduced the Genetic Information Privacy Act to the California Senate. The proposal goes a step further than the California Consumer Privacy Act as it "would prohibit a direct-to-consumer genetic testing services company from disclosing a person’s genetic information to a third party without obtaining the person’s prior written consent." Violations of the proposed legislation would result in either civil or criminal penalties.
