European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli discussed his feelings toward the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement ahead of the EU General Data Protection Regulation implementation date, EUobserver reports. “You may say Privacy Shield is still there but is less relevant for me because the entire set of standards, including the transfer, should be subject to higher standards,” Buttarelli said, adding the GDPR does produce those higher standards needed, and U.S. companies will no longer be able to use Privacy Shield as a “free pass” to use data as they desire. Meanwhile, European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will vote on a report on Privacy Shield.
