Members of the 9/11 Commission are urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to pass cybersecurity legislation before year’s end, The Hill reports. Noting recent large-scale hacks against Target and Home Depot and reports of security vulnerabilities, members warn that the U.S. could face a major cyber-attack if nothing is done. “The al Qaeda threat did not manifest itself without warning on September 11, 2001,” Commission Chairman Thomas Kean and Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton wrote in a letter. “But we did not heed those warnings until it was too late. Unfortunately, that pattern seems to be repeating itself in the cyber realm.”
