In an interview with The Washington Post, Jules Polonetsky, CIPP/US, director of the Future of Privacy Forum, discusses the privacy challenges that come with the new breed of "smart" devices and appliances. Tech companies are collecting behavioral data on users to offer better services, create efficiencies and target advertising, among other uses, and while tech companies say they are committed to protecting that data, some are concerned about the lack of regulation requiring it. "Consumers need to think more about how their data is being sent outside the home in more ways than ever and not get caught off guard when that data lands in the hands of unintended third parties," Polonetsky says.
