About the IAPP

Helena Tapp Barroso is a Portuguese lawyer, partner at Morais Leitão law firm in Lisbon, having joined the firm in 2006, following the merger of the Oporto based law firm she had been serving since 1998.

She is involved in the legal practice of both the Data Protection and the Employment and Pension Teams of Morais Leitão and she also co-chairs the firm’s Insurance and Reinsurance Team.

In her legal practice as lawyer, Helena has extensive experience in employment, insurance, technology, e-privacy and data protection issues. She provides strategic data privacy preparedness compliance and counselling focused on the GDPR, representing companies on e-privacy and personal data processing compliance programs, assessing, analyzing, and advising, particularly focusing on specific sectors of activity or subject matters such as the TMT, banking and financial sectors, pension funds, automotive industry, employment data related areas, retail (consumer) industries and, especially, on the insurance sector. She also develops relevant dispute regulation and litigation activity.

Helena serves as Data Protection Officer in Fidelidade Group companies (Multicare, Fidelidade and Fidelidade Assistência Groups) since 2018, Fidelidade being the market-leading insurer in Portugal, both in the life and non-life sectors.

She holds a Master of Laws Degree in Commercial Law (Lisbon Católica University School of Law) and was Assistant Professor at the Law School of the Lisbon University for over ten years, lecturing civil, commercial and employment law. Helena teaches regularly (postgraduate studies in Employment Law – University of Lisbon) and Data Protection specialization training.

She is a regular speaker at specialised conferences and events at national and international level and she has authored several publications on employment, data protection and privacy and insurance.
