About the IAPP

Karl Laureau is a Privacy Counsel and data privacy attorney with VeraSafe, a privacy and web security consulting company advising clients all over the world on their data protection programs, both in how to comply with legal/regulatory frameworks, and how to best meet their customers' increasingly sophisticated expectations for the privacy of personal data. He has a varied legal career in Maritime Law, Corporate Commercial, Healthcare and Life Sciences Law, and most recently, Privacy Law. Karl’s interest in Privacy Law was piqued when he implemented a large compliance project for the South African Operations group of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited (a multinational pharmaceutical company) to ensure the organization’s compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) – the South African data privacy act. Since then, Karl has developed a real passion for privacy law globally, particularly for discovering how privacy law is managed, complied with, and how it interacts with specific legislation in the Healthcare and Life Sciences space.

Karl holds an undergraduate degree in Social Studies and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Howard College in Durban, South Africa. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, reading, soccer and variety streaming.
