Staff members from The New York Times are calling on news sites to encrypt their online traffic by deploying HTTPS. The paper’s software engineering architect and its chief technology officer, together with a cybersecurity and technology strategist, write, “If you run a news site, or any site at all, we’d like to issue a friendly challenge to you. Make a commitment to have your site fully on HTTPS by the end of 2015 and pledge your support with the hashtag #https2015.” In addition to being more secure, HTTPS protects the privacy of users by preventing their search and reading histories from being transmitted “for anyone to see.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
